Adoption Specifics

What is the cost to adopt a bird?

PASO is a non-profit organization - we DO NOT sell birds. We do, however, require an adoption fee in most instances for birds adopted from us.  The fee is returned directly to the organization for the care of all our birds: Veterinary care, food, cages, perches, toys and everything required to provide the birds with proper care. The costs to keep the organization in operation and available to birds in need are high we always operate on a deficit. The adoption fees help us provide continual care for all PASO birds.

The adoption fee is determined according to the size and species of the parrot, vetting costs and cages. All adoption fees are lower than the price associated with buying the birds from breeders or pet stores. They are calculated at only about 25% of the cost to purchase the species from a pet store.  All our parrots come with appropriate size cages which is included in the adoption fee. Fees are not negotiable.

Every adoptee home must agree that if ever they are not able to keep the parrot  for whatever reasons  they will contact PASO to assist in finding a suitable home for the bird. Under no circumstances can a bird adopted from PASO be sold or given away; without permission. PASO will assist in determining whether it is best for that bird to be placed in a new home or be returned to our shelter.

You must also agree that your adoptive bird will under no circumstances be used for breeding.  There are already enough homeless birds.

Our Adoption Criteria

All adoption applicants will be interviewed by a member of PASO which may include a home visit.  Please remember that everyone is an individual and each interview will be given considerations on own merits.

You will be required to learn about the bird that you are wishing to adopt.  We can send you links to information and books that are available on the particular species.  You will be required to provide references that will be checked.  If your bird does not come with a cage you will be expected to provide a suitable cage before your bird can be placed in your home.

We also accept donations of cages, toys and bird food.

We will be here to assist with any questions or problems than may arise.
